Electroplating Solution Recovery Using Electrodialysis Systems
Compliance pressure and raw material costs have pushed more metal finishing operations to look seriously at what they're sending down the drain. Plating bath solutions laden with nickel, copper, zinc, or chrome salts alongside acids and additives represent recoverable value that most facilities write off as waste.
Electrodialysis separates ions by driving them through selective membranes under a DC electric field. In a plating context, this allows operators to strip out accumulated impurities that degrade bath performance, recover metal ions or acid from rinse stages, and return usable concentrate to the process. The membrane stack doesn't use heat, doesn't introduce chemicals, and can run continuously alongside the plating line.
What makes the recovery of electroplating solutions by electrodialysis practical at production scale is the ability to tailor the system membrane type, stack configuration, operating current density to the specific chemistry of a given bath. A nickel sulfamate line has different recovery requirements than a zinc chloride or hard chrome process, and the ED system needs to reflect that.
